BITSS is launching the third round of our Social Science Meta-Analysis and Research Transparency (SSMART) Grants – this time with a focus on research led by or partnered with researchers in the Global South.
The SSMART grant initiative seeks to support and encourage important meta-research in the social sciences in order to strengthen the reliability and validity of social science research findings. These $30k grants aim to advance understanding and design of new methodological approaches in transparency for reproducibility and reliability, as well as meta-analysis using existing data and literature to expand the evidence-base according to the following categories:
- Develop new methodology
- Produce new meta-analysis
- Study research culture and adoption of new methods

Read about two recently completed SSMART projects on our blog here and here. The first, “Aggregating Distributional Treatment Effects: A Bayesian Hierarchical Analysis of the Microcredit Literature,” by MIT economist Rachael Meager assesses the generalizability of microcredit literature and improves meta-analysis methodologies to reveal wider distributional impacts. The second, “Panel Data and Experimental Design,” by UC Berkeley economists Fiona Burlig, Louis Preonas, and Matt Woerman develops new methods for cluster-robust power calculations, and comes with a corresponding statistical package.
